Perhaps you have heard of the Israeli soldier who leaked classified information via Facebook?
On Wednesday, a IDF raid of Qatanna in the West Bank was cancelled because one of the Israeli soldiers gave important details of the mission on Facebook. Apparently, the soldier not only wrote “on Wednesday we are cleaning Qatanna, and on Thursday, God willing, going home,” but also gave details of his unit and the exact time of the sweep.
The soldier was relieved of his post and will spend 10 days in jail. Yet the most important result of this is the new IDF PR campaign against the dangers of Facebook. New posters throughout the country [tweetmeme] picture a fake Facebook friend request page with Iranian President Ahmadinejad, Hezbollah chief Nasrallah and Syria President Assad requesting to be friends. Underneath: “You think everyone is your friend?”
Maybe the sign should have simply said, “don’t put classified information online, idiot.”
