[tweetmeme] Minutes before Israeli PM Netanyahu was supposed to meet with President Obama, Israel announced more Jewish construction in East Jerusalem. To be fair, this project had been in the works for years, but the timing of the announcement, again, was strategically terrible (well, so was the content). The near universal reaction? What really?
Eitan Cabel, a member of the Labor party and part of the ruling coalition saw the timing as another way to anger America.
“Is this another ‘unfortunate’ mistake? Is this another ‘misunderstanding?'” said Cabel, a member of the Labor Party, which sits in the governing coalition.
“Netanyahu decided to spit into Obama’s eye, this time from up close. He and his pyromaniac ministers insist on setting the Middle East ablaze.”
You have to wonder who is calling the shots in Israel and if they have any common sense. Personally, I am solidly in the camp opposing any Israeli construction in East Jerusalem, as it undermines peace and (typically) involves the dispossession of Palestinians. But even if I were to support construction, I could see this as an unnecessarily bold and stupid move.
