No Space Between Washington and Tel Aviv

[tweetmeme] Perhaps naively, I have been following the ostensibly widening schism between Washington and Tel Aviv:  Obama will not put up with Israel continuing to act this way; Palestinian rights are important to America; Obama is a pretty moral guy.  Yet, unfortunately, I am shot down again.  This report came out yesterday about recent US votes in the UN.  In five important votes in the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, the US voted against measures that either criticized Israel or supported Palestinians – in two of the five, the US was the only country to vote against.

I am not surprised that the US voted against the resolutions criticizing Israel.  As health care in the US proved, change takes time; the US is not going to completely reverse course in two weeks.  But most disappointing is the no vote on this resolution:

Resolution (A/HRC/13/L.27) reaffirms the inalienable, permanent and unqualified right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, including their right to live in freedom, justice and dignity and to establish their sovereign, independent, democratic and viable contiguous State; also reaffirms its support for the solution of two States, Palestine and Israel, living side by side in peace and security…

It is just sickening that the US – a country supposedly built on the ideals of democracy and self-determination would vote against this.  All other members (45 of them) voted in favor of this measure.  You can read the entire resolution here.
