[tweetmeme] Earlier today I wrote about John Brennen mentioning an American desire to empower the moderate faction within Hezbollah. My thought was that the moderates in Hezbollah still probably reject the existence of Israel, but, like it or not, the group is not going to just go away. The best bet that the US (and Israel) has for dealing with the Shi’ite Lebanese group is to either try to push it towards the middle or try to undermine its popularity in Lebanon. Unfortunately, the latter option is somewhat limited: it is supported by 97% of Lebanese Shi’a (2009 poll) and is only growing stronger in other sects (Hariri and Jumblatt, in particular, are swooning at the moment). Meanwhile, Hezbollah does not believe that an American attempt to push Hezbollah to the American notion of moderate will work.
Here is a video from Al Jazeera – a quick interview of Ibrahim El Moussaoui, the head of Hezbollah’s media relations office. Moussaoui predictably says that Hezbollah is a political-resistance hybrid party and that the US should be the last ones to differentiate between extremists and moderates. A good short clip for today.
