[tweetmeme] After Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu generously offered to concede the possibility of 2 more months of an ineffective and partial settlement freeze in exchange for Palestinians dropping the unimportant and overstated right of return, the United States ensured its reputation as an unbiased mediator by clarifying its stance on the idea of a Jewish state. The US State Department spokesman Philip Crowley reaffirmed that:
We recognize the special nature of the Israeli state. It is a state for the Jewish people.
Personally, I don’t really understand what the big deal is. A state for Jewish people; a state in which gentiles have no moral or historical rights. Yeah, and? Some people, I suppose are overreacting to what Palestinian recognition of a Jewish state would mean. Take for example, tweets by Electronic Intifada founder Ali Abunimah:
Come on Abunimah, this is not South Africa and it is not Northern Ireland. This is Israel. And we like Israel. So stop blowing smoke into everyone’s eyes and come on out and admit that you are wrong and the Palestinians should just apologize and move to Jordan.
